How to Teach Social Education Skills for Children and Youth

A key factor in the reduction of bullying and empowering socially responsible people

An important part of our goal as educators is to encourage and empower our students to be healthy, positive, contributing members of society. We are able to influence important academic, personal management and teamwork skills in students by empowering and encouraging them to be receptive and willing learners. Respectful social skills provide a foundation for learning, relationships and citizenship.

We as educators must not only bring to the attention of students, specific behaviours that are vicious or malicious and unacceptable, but we must also discuss constructive, positive social behaviour and communication alternatives as well. An empowered classroom-learning environment, successful students as well as respectful, successful classroom management is something we all strive for as educators.

Topics in the workshop include the how to’s of:

  • Respectful listening, completing assignments
  • Problem solving, goal setting
  • Expressing feelings and concerns
  • Contributing to discussions
  • Dealing with pressure, fear and anger
  • Saying no, saying thank you
  • Giving and accepting an apology
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Showing understanding for others
  • Offering help, following directions
  • Introducing yourself
